Many Muslim communities lack well-established mosques, making it difficult for believers to conduct daily prayers and connect with Allah. Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO) constructs mosques in different vulnerable areas of the country to bridge this gap.
According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics, 14 percent of the population are Muslims, totaling 9.1 million individuals. However, many Muslims do not have access to the Holy Quran, Quran teachers, and other Islamic books necessary to deepen their understanding of Islam. TICO distributes Qurans and Yassarna booklets to mosques, Quran memorization centers, and individuals to bring Allah's word closer to vulnerable Muslims who cannot afford to purchase such materials.
Qurban (Dhuhia) honors the willingness of the Prophet Ibrahim to sacrifice his son as an act of obedience to Allah's command. Muslims all over the world slaughter animals like cattle, sheep, and goats during this festival and share the meat with needy families. TICO slaughters animals, distributes meat and food packages to needy families, allowing them to celebrate Eid joyfully.
Many Muslims are caught up in circumstances beyond their control and are forced to forego the fasting period yet it is so critical in the Islamic religion. A number of them come from poor families thus are not able to afford food that can take them through the fasting period. Such kind of Muslims, if not helped can easily be left out of fasting yet it is very important in the Islamic faith as it is the fourth pillar. TICO provides iftar to fasting Muslims around Uganda during the Holy month of Ramadan, ensuring that they can observe the fast and strengthen their faith.
Seminars are valuable opportunities to spread and promote Islamic teachings to both Muslims and non-Muslims. Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation organizes seminars where knowledgeable teachers present to attendees about Islamic values, morals, and teachings through religious festivities, lectures, and symposiums. This instills right knowledge and awakens all foundations of Islam among believers.
Through our sister organization, Twahirah Islamic Center, we offer and sponsor students with physical and online Islamic courses that are easily accessible and encourage interactive learning. The center also conducts Daawah programs, Islamic lectures, and Quran recitations in mosques. TICO aims at strengthening the faith of Muslims, promoting Islamic teachings, and providing essential religious resources to vulnerable communities.
Many pupils and students in Uganda from vulnerable families attend school without the necessary learning materials, making their educational journey more challenging and often leading to high school dropout rates. Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO) addresses this issue by providing scholastic materials to vulnerable children, improving their learning experience and reducing the likelihood of school dropout.
Accessing education is a privilege for many in marginalized communities. However, the quality of education in these areas is often compromised due to limited resources. Additionally, many children are unable to attend school regularly due to financial constraints. TICO sponsors children from primary level, ensuring they have access to quality education. By alleviating the burden of school fees for vulnerable families, we aim to provide these children with the opportunity to thrive academically.
In Uganda, the girl child often faces significant disadvantages compared to boys. Many girls are denied equal opportunities, particularly in communities where traditional gender roles are prevalent. In Uganda, many women are single mothers who face numerous struggles in raising their children. Additionally, a significant number of women are stay-at-home wives who do not have a source of income, putting them at risk during times of need. Good health is essential for productivity and overall well-being. However, in communities where disease is prevalent, people often struggle to be productive and face numerous health risks. According to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (2021), 41% of Uganda's population lives in absolute poverty, earning less than U.S. $1.77 per person per day. These vulnerable families face significant challenges, including food insecurity, emotional stress, homelessness, and more. Without assistance, their hopes diminish, and their situations worsen over time. Agriculture is the backbone of Uganda's economy, with 70% of the population depending on it as their main source of income and employment. However, many farmers operate on a small scale and use outdated farming methods, resulting in low-quality and low-yield produce. Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO) is committed to supporting farmers and improving agricultural practices through our Agriculture Program.
In Uganda, over 8.4 million people lack access to safe, clean water, leaving them vulnerable to waterborne diseases. The most affected communities are those in rural villages, where people fetch water from swamps and ponds that are often distant and contaminated by animal waste. Children are particularly at risk, as they are often responsible for fetching water from these distant sources. This exposes them to danger from animals and other hazards, jeopardizing their safety and well-being. Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation addresses this critical need through our Water and Sanitation Program.
