Restoring Mobility and Independence for Persons with Disabilities

In Uganda, approximately 5.5 million people representing 13.2% of the population live with disabilities, according to the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS, 2024). For many, the journey toward self-reliance is blocked by significant systemic barriers, including inaccessible physical environments, a lack of assistive technology, and persistent social stigma. Without the necessary tools to navigate their surroundings, individuals with physical disabilities are often excluded from education, skills training, and economic opportunities, trapping them in a cycle of dependency and isolation.

Twahirah Islamic Charity Organisation (TICO) is committed to breaking these barriers by providing the essential mobility aids required for a dignified life. We recognise that for a person with physical impairment, a wheelchair is not just a piece of equipment; it is a gateway to independence. It allows a child to attend school, a parent to reach their place of work, and an individual to participate actively in community life. By addressing the lack of adaptive devices, we help transform an unsuitable environment into one where the physically challenged can pursue their needs and aspirations.
